
Getting More Out of Your Old SMI SR 8 Blowers
If you’re running an older SMI SR 8, you probably know the struggle. The heating elements get tired. They fade. Suddenly, your preforms aren’t heating evenly, and you’re tossing way too many bottles into the scrap bin. It’s frustrating. But here’s the thing: you don’t necessarily need a new machine. Usually, you just need better lamps.
The trick to faster heating
It all comes down to heat density. The SR 8 uses shortwave infrared to get through that PET wall. We’ve designed replacement lamps that pack more wattage into the same physical space. Think of it as a more concentrated punch of heat. Because the heat flux is higher, the preform hits its target temperature much faster. That means you can speed up the conveyor or shorten the dwell time in the tunnel. More bottles, less waiting. Just a heads-up: more power means more heat bleeding into the machine frame. Before you swap them out,**take a look at your cooling fans.**If they’re clogged with dust, you’re going to overheat the internals. Clean them first.
What’s actually inside these lamps?
We use quartz glass with a halogen cycle. In plain English? It stops the tungsten from evaporating. This keeps the tube crystal clear so your output doesn’t drop off after a few weeks. Installation is a breeze. We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, so they just drop right in. As long as the voltage matches your transformer, you won’t have to touch the wiring. Plus, the coating on the quartz is specifically tuned for PET. Instead of wasting energy heating up the air in the oven, the heat goes exactly where it belongs: into the plastic.
What this actually does for your floor
The biggest win is killing those annoying “cold spots” in the preform. When the heat is uniform, the stretch is uniform. You’ll notice thinner walls in the shoulder and a much stronger base. It’s a cheap way to squeeze extra productivity out of a machine that’s otherwise still in great shape. We see the biggest difference in plants running heavy-wall preforms. Those are the ones where the original lamps just can’t keep up when you try to crank up the speed. Now, they can.
