Here is the secret: you don’t just buy the most powerful lamp you can find. That’s a quick way to waste money and potentially melt your fixtures. It’s all about balance. You want just enough heat to feel cozy, but not so much that you’re stepping into a sauna.
Finding your sweet spot
Think about the size of your space. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp is usually plenty. For those medium-sized bathrooms (4-8m²), you’ll probably want something in the 800W to 1200W range to keep things feeling steady. If you’re dealing with a massive master bath—anything over 10m²—don’t try to do it with one bulb. Go for a few 1500W arrays instead. The cool thing about short-wave infrared is that it doesn’t bother heating up all the air in the room. It goes straight to your skin and the surfaces around you. It feels instant. You’re warm the second you flip the switch.
The gear inside
We use quartz glass and halogen gas for a reason. It lets the filament get screaming hot without burning out. We also stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because they can handle the way quartz expands when it heats up. Cheap solder joints just can’t keep up and they’ll eventually fail. But a word of caution. High wattage means a lot of heat in a very small space. If you try to jam a 1500W lamp into a fixture meant for 600W, you’re asking for trouble. The housing could warp or the wiring might just give up. Double-check the thermal rating on your chassis before you swap anything out.
Making it work for you
If you want to save on your electric bill, hook these up to a timer or a motion sensor. Since infrared heat vanishes the moment the power cuts, there’s no “cooling down” phase. You get heat exactly when you need it, and zero waste when you leave. Keep your reflectors clean, match the wattage to your room size, and the whole setup should cruise along for years.
