
Getting Your KHS Oven Heat Actually Even
If you’ve spent any time on a KHS blow molding line, you know the frustration of uneven heat. One minute everything is fine, and the next, you’re staring at bottles with weird wall thickness or that annoying pearlescent haze. When your heat field is off, it feels like you’re fighting a losing battle against your own scrap rate. We’ve spent a lot of time building high-end softening lamps that just work. They’re designed to slide right into your existing setup, matching—or even beating—the thermal profiles you get from the original equipment.
The real struggle with heat
The biggest headache in preform heating is the “cold spot.” It sounds small, but it’s a killer. Here’s the thing: if the filament is off by even 0.5mm, the whole radiation pattern shifts. It’s a tiny distance, but it makes a huge difference. That’s why we obsess over filament centering and quartz purity. We use a high-purity quartz envelope so the glass doesn’t soak up the infrared energy. Instead, that heat goes exactly where it should—straight into the preform wall. We also spec these for high power density. This means you get a much faster ramp-up time. Just a heads-up, though: if you’re pushing higher wattage, make sure your oven’s ventilation is dialed in. You don’t want the neck of the preform overheating while you’re chasing speed.
No rewiring, no headaches
Nobody wants to spend their weekend rewiring a machine. Our lamps use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors, so they just slide into your current sockets. We also reinforced the seals at the end caps. Most cheap tubes burn out because gas leaks in; we fixed that. Plus, we added a special coating to the quartz that reflects heat inward. Instead of wasting energy heating up the oven walls, the heat stays focused on the PET. It’s a simpler way to keep your energy bills from spiking.
What this looks like on the floor
You can swap these in during any planned stop. Because the heat is consistent across the entire length of the tube, you aren’t stuck spending hours tweaking PID controllers. You get a stable heat field. And once things are stable, you can finally push the machine faster without worrying about under-heated zones in the bottle body. It just makes the whole shift run smoother.
